The International Workshop on Multimedia Information Systems 2004 is the tenth of a series of workshops that started in 1995 with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary discussions and research in all aspects of multimedia information systems, in all their diversity.



MIS 2004 will return to the Washington DC area, which is where the first workshop in the series was held. MIS 2004 follows upon the success of the nine workshops in this series that were held in Arlington (VA), West Point (NY), Como (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey), Indian Wells (CA), Chicago (IL), Capri (Italy), Tempe (AZ) and Ischia (Italy).

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts in all aspects of multimedia information systems. A special theme of this year's workshop is Multimedia Sensor Systems. This emerging area involves a confluence of multimedia systems, operating systems, databases, networking, computer vision, and information retrieval. Papers focusing on information integration, fusion, and delivery in multimedia sensor systems as well as systems, networking and application issues in sensor systems are specifically encouraged. In addition, papers on traditional multimedia information systems topics are also solicited.

These include but are not limited to

  • Multimedia information fusion
  • Multimedia networking and streaming
  • Multimedia information storage and retrieval
  • Information visualization and multilevel displays
  • Multimedia mining
  • Querying multimedia databases
  • Generalized inferencing, artificial intelligence, and algorithms, as applicable to MISs.
  • Multimedia indexing and retrieval by content,
  • Distributed multimedia systems and media servers,
  • Spatial and spatio-temporal storage and retrieval,
  • Query processing and optimization,
  • Document management,
  • XML, content description, and standards,
  • Distant learning, virtual meetings, and interactive applications,
  • E-commerce applications.

Selected papers from on multimedia sensor topics will be invited for submission to a special issue of ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal. A journal issue comprising of selected papers on traditional MIS topics is also being planned.
